Minigolf Tournament – BMGA British Open 2008, Margate, Kent 13th & 14th September

The British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour returns to Margate in Kent on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July as Strokes Adventure Golf course has the honour of hosting the 2008 BMGA British Open, the second Minigolf Major of the season.

Over 70 BMGA Tour Professionals and top players from European countries including Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany and Finland will be descending on Margate for the BMGA British Open and new players are also invited to compete.

The two-day tournament will comprise of four rounds of competitive Minigolf on the Saturday for all players, before a ‘cut’ is made to decide the group of 36 players who will play two more rounds on the Sunday. The top 18 players will then take part in the seventh and final ‘Super Round’ to decide the final rankings and the winner will be crowned the 2008 BMGA British Open champion.

For Junior players (16 and under) the results of the first days play will count as the BMGA British Junior Championships with prizes available for all Junior players.

The reigning and two-time BMGA British Open champion is Jouni Valkjarvi from Finland. He said, “I’m looking forward to the event again this year. I hear there will be even more top players from Europe coming over than last year, so it will be a tough competition. Also the top British players have shown recently that they are ready for the challenge.”

The 2008 tournament is the 11th year of the BMGA British Open and the second year that the Strokes Adventure Golf course in Margate has hosted the event.

Strokes Adventure Golf Course owner Brian Wood said “We are delighted to be hosting the BMGA British Open for the second year running and look forward to an exciting two days of top class Minigolf action.”

Sean “Freebird” Homer, Captain of the Kent Minigolf Club which is based at the Strokes Course, said “With a field of around 60-70 competitors including players from across the British Isles along with a large international contingent from Sweden, Germany, the Czech Republic and Finland the 2008 British Open promises to be one of the best ever.”

London Minigolf Club member Lionel “The Spoon” Bender has made the most appearances in the tournament, playing in each of the previous ten BMGA British Opens. His best finish to date was 5th place in 1998. Reflecting on his impressive ten years in the sport, 2004 BMGA British Senior Champion Lionel said, "In from the start of the BMGA and about to play my tenth consecutive British Open is surely one record I cannot lose.”

Places are still available for players wishing to participate; the cost is £35.00 for adults and £15.00 for juniors (under 16).
